Search advertising revenue
Search engines fund unpaid results with paid search ads. Revenue from those ads shows how much commercial activity flows through search. Alphabet reports a line called “Google Search & other”. Microsoft reports a line called “Search advertising”, which covers Bing, Copilot, Microsoft News, Microsoft Edge and third-party affiliates.

Source: Alphabet Form 10-K for fiscal 2025, filed February 2026. Values are rounded from figures reported in millions.
Alphabet’s search revenue grew in each of the last three years. In the second quarter of 2026, Google Search & other revenue was $63,271 million, against $54,190 million a year earlier. That is the 17% growth Alphabet reported for the quarter.
Microsoft’s Search advertising revenue grew by $1.3 billion or 9% in fiscal 2026. Microsoft attributes the growth in revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs to higher search volume and revenue per search, as well as third-party partnerships.
Paid clicks and cost per click
Alphabet discloses the change in paid clicks and cost per click on Google Search & other properties. Paid clicks count clicks on ads by users of Google search properties. The metrics give an indirect read on search volume and on what advertisers pay for each visit.
| Measure | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Change in paid clicks, 2025 against 2024 | 6% | Alphabet Form 10-K, February 2026 |
| Change in cost per click, 2025 against 2024 | 7% | Alphabet Form 10-K, February 2026 |
| Change in paid clicks, Q2 2026 against Q2 2025 | 13% | Alphabet Form 10-Q, quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
| Change in cost per click, Q2 2026 against Q2 2025 | 3% | Alphabet Form 10-Q, quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
Paid click growth rose from 6% for full-year 2025 to 13% in the second quarter of 2026. Cost per click growth slowed over the same span. Alphabet states that paid clicks move with search queries, advertiser spending and product changes. For SEO teams, rising paid clicks show that commercial search demand on Google was still growing in 2026.
AI search features and chat assistants
Google now places AI-generated answers inside its search results. It reports two features: AI Overviews, which appear above standard results, and AI Mode, a conversational search mode. OpenAI reports usage of ChatGPT, which many people also use to look for information.
| Measure | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly users of Google AI Overviews | over 2.5 billion | Alphabet investor presentation, June 3, 2026 |
| Monthly active users of Google AI Mode | over 1 billion | Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings remarks, July 22, 2026 |
| Monthly active users of the Gemini app | 950 million | Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings remarks, July 22, 2026 |
| Weekly users of ChatGPT | 1.2 billion | OpenAI DevDay recap, September 29, 2026 |
| Share of ChatGPT consumer messages classed as “Asking” | 49% | OpenAI, September 15, 2025 |
| Share of ChatGPT consumer usage that is not work-related | about 70% | OpenAI, September 15, 2025 |
| Share of ChatGPT conversations on practical guidance, seeking information and writing | three-quarters | OpenAI, September 15, 2025 |
In its July 2026 earnings remarks, Alphabet stated that AI Mode, like AI Overviews, drives an incremental increase in Search queries overall. It also stated that Google now sends billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search. Alphabet did not publish a click total for the period.
The OpenAI usage figures come from a study of 1.5 million consumer conversations, released with a National Bureau of Economic Research working paper. “Asking” covers messages where people seek information or advice. That category is the closest match to a search query.
How AI summaries change clicks
Pew Research Center measured what Google users did after a search in March 2025. The study used browsing data from 900 US adults in its KnowledgePanel Digital panel and covered 68,879 unique Google searches. It shows associations between AI summaries and clicks. It does not prove that summaries cause the difference.
| Measure, March 2025 | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Respondents with at least one Google search that produced an AI summary | 58% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
| Google searches that produced an AI summary | 18% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
| Visits with an AI summary that led to a click on a traditional result | 8% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
| Visits without an AI summary that led to a click on a traditional result | 15% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
| Visits with an AI summary that led to a click on a link inside the summary | 1% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
| Pages with an AI summary where the user ended the browsing session | 26% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
| Pages with only traditional results where the user ended the browsing session | 16% | Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025 |
Source: Pew Research Center, "Google users are less likely to click on links when an AI summary appears in the results", July 22, 2025. Browsing data from 900 US adults, March 1 to 31, 2025.
Pew also looked at which searches produce summaries and what the summaries cite.
- Only 8% of one- or two-word searches produced an AI summary.
- The share rose to 53% for searches with 10 words or more.
- 60% of searches that began with question words such as “who”, “what”, “when” or “why” produced an AI summary.
- 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources.
- The median AI summary was 67 words long.
- Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources listed in AI summaries.
- 6% of the sources linked in AI summaries were .gov websites, compared with 2% in standard results.
For site owners, the pattern is clear. Long, question-style queries are the ones most likely to show a summary. Those are also the queries that informational content usually targets.
What searchers think of AI summaries
Pew surveyed 5,153 US adults from August 18 to 24, 2025, on its American Trends Panel. The survey asked how often people see AI summaries in search results and how much they trust them.
| Measure, August 2025 | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| US adults who at least sometimes come across AI summaries in search results | 65% | Pew Research Center, October 1, 2025 |
| US adults who see them extremely often or often | 45% | Pew Research Center, October 1, 2025 |
| Adults who have seen summaries and find them extremely or very useful | one in five | Pew Research Center, October 1, 2025 |
| Adults who have seen summaries and have at least some trust in them | 53% | Pew Research Center, October 1, 2025 |
| Adults who have seen summaries and trust them a lot | 6% | Pew Research Center, October 1, 2025 |
Exposure to AI summaries is wide, but trust is shallow. About half of people who see them have some trust in the information. Very few trust it a lot. A further 52% of those who have seen summaries call them somewhat useful.
Search in the United Kingdom
Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, publishes the Online Nation report each year. The 2025 edition was published on December 10, 2025. Its audience figures come from the Ipsos iris measurement service.
| Measure | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| UK online adults who used Google Search, May 2025 | 82% | Ofcom Online Nation, December 2025 |
| Monthly Google web searches in the UK | 3 billion | Ofcom Online Nation, December 2025 |
| UK keyword search queries that deliver AI-supported overviews | around 30% | Ofcom Online Nation, December 2025 |
| UK people who say they often see AI summaries | 53% | Ofcom Online Nation, December 2025 |
| ChatGPT UK web visits, August 2025 | 252 million | Ofcom Online Nation, December 2025 |
| Growth in ChatGPT UK web visits, year to August 2025 | 156% | Ofcom Online Nation, December 2025 |
Ofcom describes ChatGPT as the second-largest search service in the UK. Google still dominates by a wide margin. Ofcom also notes that most exposure to AI overviews is passive. People use their usual search engine and receive an overview with the results.
How Google tests changes to Search
Google publishes counts of the tests behind changes to its ranking and results. The figures below cover 2023, the latest year on Google’s “How Search Works” testing page at the check date. Google states that it ran over 700,000 experiments that year, resulting in more than 4,000 improvements.
| Measure, 2023 | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launches to Search | 4,781 | Google, How Search Works, checked October 2026 |
| Live traffic experiments | 16,871 | Google, How Search Works, checked October 2026 |
| Search quality tests | 719,326 | Google, How Search Works, checked October 2026 |
| Side-by-side experiments | 124,942 | Google, How Search Works, checked October 2026 |
The 4,781 launches equal about 13 changes to Search per day in 2023. SEO teams therefore track rankings all year, not only after named core updates.
Crawlers and referral traffic
Cloudflare operates a network that serves a large share of websites. It publishes data on bot traffic and on the referrals that search engines and AI platforms send back to sites. These figures are vendor-reported and reflect traffic on Cloudflare’s network only.
| Measure | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Google share of referral traffic | about 88% | Cloudflare (vendor-reported), July 1, 2026 |
| Crawler requests made for AI training, June 2026 | 52% | Cloudflare (vendor-reported), July 1, 2026 |
| Largest decline in human traffic in heavily crawled categories, less than one year | as much as 40% | Cloudflare (vendor-reported), July 1, 2026 |
| Googlebot share of all AI and search crawler traffic | 39% | Cloudflare (vendor-reported), August 29, 2025 |
| Pages crawled by Anthropic per referred page visit, July 2025 | 38,000 | Cloudflare (vendor-reported), August 29, 2025 |
| OpenAI bot requests per human visitor referred, July 2025 | 1,091 | Cloudflare (vendor-reported), August 29, 2025 |
The share of crawler requests made for AI training rose from 22% in spring 2025 to 52% in June 2026. Google remains the main source of referred visitors. Cloudflare notes that traffic referred by native apps such as Claude’s does not include a Referer header. Its referral counts therefore cover web-based tools only.
The market around SEO
Three further figures describe the commercial setting for SEO work: online retail, marketing labor and SEO software.
| Measure | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| US retail e-commerce sales, Q2 2026, seasonally adjusted | $340.2 billion | US Census Bureau, August 18, 2026 |
| E-commerce share of total US retail sales, Q2 2026 | 17.1% | US Census Bureau, August 18, 2026 |
| Median pay of US advertising, promotions and marketing managers, 2025 | $165,780 per year | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked October 2026 |
| Median annual wage of US marketing managers, May 2025 | $166,790 | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked October 2026 |
| US jobs for advertising, promotions and marketing managers, 2025 | 454,800 | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked October 2026 |
| Projected employment growth for the same occupations, 2025 to 2035 | 6% | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked October 2026 |
| Equity value of Adobe’s acquisition of Semrush | about $1.9 billion | Adobe, November 2025 |
US e-commerce sales grew 12.2% from the second quarter of 2025, against 6.7% growth in total retail sales. Online stores depend on search for product discovery, which keeps demand for SEO high in retail. BLS rates the 6% projected growth for marketing managers as faster than average. Adobe completed the Semrush acquisition on April 28, 2026. Adobe described Semrush as a brand visibility platform and linked the deal to discovery through AI assistants and agents.
Method
- Data window. Figures date from 2023 to September 2026. The 2023 Google testing counts are the latest Google has published. The page prefers the most recent release of each series.
- Primary sources only. Each figure links to the body that first published it. These are SEC filings by Alphabet and Microsoft, official Google, OpenAI and Adobe releases, Pew Research Center, Ofcom, the US Census Bureau and the BLS. Cloudflare figures are labeled vendor-reported. Statistics aggregators, SEO blogs that re-quote figures and Wikipedia were not used.
- Checks. StatWharf Editorial opened each source in October 2026 and confirmed that the figure and its date appear there. Figures that could not be found on a primary source were left out. This includes the 2024 US court finding on Google’s share of general search, because the opinion could not be retrieved from an official site at the check date. Third-party click-through-rate studies were also left out.
- No modeling. The page reports published figures. Two values are simple arithmetic on published numbers: the chart values rounded to US$ billion, and the average of 13 launches per day, which divides 4,781 launches by 365 days.
- Measures differ. Pew measured US browsing behavior in one month. Ofcom used panel measurement in the UK. Cloudflare counted traffic on its own network. Comparisons are valid within one source, not across sources.
Using these figures
The figures show a search market that is still growing in revenue and paid clicks, while AI summaries change how often a search ends in a visit. Pew found clicks on traditional results nearly halve when a summary appears. Google reports more queries overall and billions of weekly clicks from AI features. Both trends matter for planning content and measuring results. Businesses that want an agency to run that work can compare service scope, pricing disclosure and engagement minimums in the StatWharf comparison of SEO agencies.
